Nathaniel Arcangel “Thaniel” Lumang, age 65 of Brownsville, TX, passed away Monday, June 23, 2025, at Valley Baptist Medical Center – Harlingen, surrounded by family and friends. He was born January 23, 1960, in Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, to the late Saturnino and Florecilla Lumang. He went to Immaculate Conception Academy in Batac, Class of 1976, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Janet Encarnacion, on April 8, 1986.
Thaniel graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Electronics, and worked at the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT)soon after. In 1995, Janet accepted a job in Brownsville, Texas, and a year later, Thaniel and their four children joined her.
Thaniel was an unassuming man, except when it came to talking about basketball and cars. His common phrases to his kids were “How’s your car?” and “Drive slowly.” For family get-togethers, he had a knack for cooking all the family’s favorite dishes. It was important for him to be there for all birthdays, graduations, and any celebrations for his family, both near and far. During his last year of life, his dream was fulfilled of becoming a grandfather.
Thaniel was preceded by his parents, Saturnino and Florecilla; brother, Esplendor Lumang; and grandson, Julian Escobedo.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Lumang; daughter, Janielle Escobedo and husband Jorge Escobedo; son, Jonathan Lumang; daughter, Nathalie Blair and husband Jonathan Blair; daughter, Natasha Abanilla and husband Bradley Abanilla; brother, Noeto and wife Eunice Lumang (and children); brother Enone and wife Josie Lumang (and children); brother Bermel and wife Florecilla Lumang (and children); sister-in-law, Wilma Lumang (and children); and grandchildren, Lily Jane Blair and Cristian Alexander Escobedo.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m., with a Memorial Service at 5:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services conclude at the end of the evening.
