Roman G. Garcia, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, at the age of 90. A lifelong resident of Brownsville, Texas, Roman was known for his unwavering devotion to his family, his deep faith, and his hardworking spirit.
Born on June 5, 1934, Roman was preceded in death by his father Roman Garcia, his mother Josefa Garzoria Garcia, his first wife Juanita Martinez Garcia, his siblings Guadalupe Garcia, Macario Garcia, Concepcion Gonzalez, Fidencia Velez, Paula Aguilar, Francisco Garcia, and Ester Lopez, his son Ruben Garcia, and his grandson Roman Garcia IV.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Leonides Garcia, and his children: Roman Garcia III, Eliza Garcia, Reymundo Garcia (Luisa+), Elida Saldivar (Humberto), Estela Ramirez (David), Eva Longoria (Federico), and Erika Longoria (Juan). Roman also leaves behind a legacy of love through his 24 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins who cherished him dearly.
Roman dedicated 30 years of his life as a foreman at Gayman Ship Building, which later became Oil Patch, at the Port of Brownsville Shrimp Basin, where he was respected for his work ethic and leadership. A true jack of all trades, he was a skilled carpenter who took immense pride in building his own home—a testament to his determination and craftsmanship.
Roman, an avid outdoorsman, found joy in hunting, fishing, and gardening. He deeply admired musica regional and the lively sound of the accordion, never passing up a chance to dance. Additionally, Roman was a devout Catholic and a dedicated parishioner of Our Lord of Divine Mercy Catholic Church.
He was known for his warm heart, generous nature, and the strong values he instilled in his family. Cherishing his heritage, he ensured it was passed down through generations, always placing family at the center of his life. He consistently emphasized the importance of education and took immense pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren.
He will be remembered as a pillar of strength, a loyal friend, and a man who lived a life full of love, laughter, and purpose. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.
Serving as pallbearers will be Juan Longoria III, Jason Ramirez, Christopher Vega, Reymundo Garcia Jr., Javier Garcia, Eduardo Saldivar, Ruben Saldivar, and Rueben Joel Garcia.
Honorary pallbearers will include David Ramirez, Juan Longoria Jr., Federico Longoria, Federico Longoria Jr., Humberto Saldivar, and Steven Michael Galvan.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025 with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The chapel opens at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. at Lord of Divine Mercy Catholic Church and interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. to Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
