Alfredo L. Cortez, 79, of Brownsville, Texas, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. He was born in Brownsville, on January 26, 1944, to Emiliano and Catalina Lopez Cortez.
Alfredo attended schools in Brownsville and then proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and was aboard the U.S.S. John C. Calhoun nuclear submarine participating in classified missions for the U.S. Navy.
After retiring from B.I.S.D. he operated an air conditioning and heating business until recently when his health declined and was forced to retire.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are his sons, Javier, Jaime, and Joel Cortez, his brother Arturo Cortez, his cousin Carlos Ruiz, his best man at his wedding, Jose Guadalupe Rodriguez, and his sister Imelda McRee.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Carolina Ramirez; by his parents Emiliano and Catalina Cortez; and three brothers Armando, Alberto, and Arnoldo Cortez.
Left to cherish his memory are his four sons Jorge Cortez, Javier (Romelia) Cortez, Jaime (Chelsea) Cortez and Joel Cortez; his four grandchildren Diego, Raquel, Oziel and Ryan; and his siblings Arturo Cortez and Imelda Cortez McRee.
Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024, with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The chapel opens at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church and Interment with full Military Honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Buena Vista Burial Park.
