Domingo Lerma Jr.

Domingo Lerma Jr.

Domingo Lerma, Jr, 80, of Brownsville, TX, devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, entered into enteral rest Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Valley Baptist Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Brownsville, TX, on December 18, 1943.

He is preceded in death by Domingo and Otilia Lerma; Dominga (Minga) Lerma, Florestela Lerma Garcia, and Bernadino Cavazos Lerma.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 53 years Diana Tavarez Lerma; Jason Ryan and Joshua Joseph Lerma; and Dolores Lerma Espindola, Otilia Lerma Garcia, and Manuel Lerma.

Domingo, also known as DJ or Sonny, was a peoples man. He committed his life to his family and being the “top city’s mechanic.” He made friends with anyone, anywhere. A man of small words but a man with a heart of gold. Sonny loved to work on his yard and was a hat enthusiast. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968 and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Sonny’s passion was mechanics. From 1969 – 2018, Sonny worked for the Brownsville Independent School District, first as a vocational instructor at Homer Hanna High School and then as a supervisor mechanic at the BISD Transportation Dept. But Sonny always had an open door policy for his family and friends and never said no to helping others when they were in need. Weekends were full of working on vehicles from his own home. He worked with pride and love.

The Lerma family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Monsignor Heberto Diaz and staff at Mary Mother of the Church, Valley Texas Coastal (VA) Harlingen, Dr. Escobedo, Dr. Gonzalez, Dr. Thomas Carlos Luna, ICU Doctors and Nurses at Valley Baptist Medical Center – Brownsville, and Cardiologist – Dr. Fadi Alfayoumi.

Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 – 9:00 PM with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 PM on Monday, January 8, 2024. At Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Chapel opens at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A mass will be held at 10:00 AM at Mary Mother of the Church. Diana and sons, my most profound sympathy for the loss of your beloved husband and father. I remember seeing Sonny at Mass every Sunday; I remember him willing to help in any way he could in his own quiet way. Sonny and my husband Modest Garcia who was in St. Mary’ s Parish Council spent many hours making hamburgers during St. Mary’s Fall Festivals. God bless you and all of Sonny’s relatives.
