In Loving Memory of Maria DeLourdes “Mary Lou” Cardenas Aguilar

December 4, 1951 – July 2, 2026

With profound sadness and unwavering faith in God’s promise of eternal life, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Maria DeLourdes “Mary Lou” Cardenas Aguilar, who entered into the loving embrace of our Lord on July 2, 2026, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas, at the age of 74.

Born on December 4, 1951, to Felix Luis Cardenas and Juanita Maria (Garcia) Cardenas, Mary Lou was raised in Brownsville, Texas, where she built a life rooted in faith, family, compassion, and service. She graduated from Brownsville High School in 1970 and continued her education at Texas Southmost College in 1971.

Mary Lou dedicated much of her life to serving the children and families of the Brownsville community. She began her career as Secretary for the Bilingual Department in 1971, later serving as Secretary at Egly Elementary beginning in 1974. She continued her lifelong commitment to education as a Parent Liaison at both Paredes Elementary and Morningside Elementary, where her kindness, patience, and genuine care touched the lives of countless students, parents, and colleagues.

A woman of deep Catholic faith, Mary Lou devoted herself to serving the Lord through music and fellowship. She was a faithful member of both the Christ the King and Holy Family Church Choirs and was actively involved in the Holy Family Youth Group. Her faith guided every aspect of her life, and she shared God’s love through her generous spirit, compassionate heart, and joyful presence.

Mary Lou embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. She found happiness in dancing, singing, playing tennis, horseback riding, swimming, and proudly cheering on her beloved Kansas City Chiefs. She possessed a radiant smile, an unforgettable sense of humor, and a warmth that could brighten any room she entered. Affectionately known by many as “Miss Hollywood,” she had a gift for making others laugh, feel welcomed, and know they were loved. Her beauty shined not only on the outside but through every act of kindness she shared.

Above all, Mary Lou’s greatest joy was her family. She cherished every moment spent with those she loved and created countless memories that will forever remain in their hearts. Her unconditional love, unwavering encouragement, and selfless devotion leave behind a legacy that will continue through generations.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Gonzalo Aguilar of 54 years with their upcoming anniversary of 55 years on July 25th; her loving daughters, Vianey (Eduardo) Trevino and Valerie (Rigo) Aguilar Aramburo; her cherished grandchildren, Angelique Azelle Trevino, Cyrus Alexander Trevino, Alexa Monique Torres, and Isaac Torres; and her treasured great-grandson, Esau Ricardo Torres.

She is also survived by her beloved siblings, Irma (Ignacio) Guerrero and Jose Alfredo (Norma) Cardenas; along with sister in law, Dora (Jerry) Johnson and brother in law, Rolando (Teresa) De Jesus Aguilar Sr. and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were forever blessed by knowing her.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Felix Luis Cardenas+ and Juanita Maria (Garcia) Cardenas+, and her brother, Felix (Cristela) Luis Cardenas Jr.+
