Maria Moncerrat Cantú Chapa, 83 of Brownsville, Texas, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, entered into eternal rest on July 8, 2026, at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas. She was born in San Fernando Tamaulipas on October 30, 1942.
She is preceded in death by her husband Santana Medina Curiel, her son Santiago Medina, father Praxedis Cantú, mother Natalia Alvarado, siblings Moncerrat Cantú, Luis Cantú, Petra Cantú, Oscar Cantú & Guadalupe Cantú.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Alma Medina Garza (Greg Garza), Janie Cantu Sanchez (Lorenzo Sanchez), sons Rolando Medina, Mario Medina (Martha Cristina Medina). Grandsons Santiago Medina Jr. (Dominique Medina) and Gregg Garza, Granddaughters Stephanie Nicole Garza (Carlos Alvarado), Brianna Medina and Alexis Medina (Marco Muñoz). Great Granddaughters Sophia A. Alvarado, Zulema Medina and Elianna Medina. Brother Ruben Cantu Alvarado. Several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00pm at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Chapel (Sunset Memorial Funeral Home) will open from 12:00 to 2:30pm following the Interment at 3:00pm at Guillen Community Cemetery on 9055 Boca Chica Blvd. Pallbearers will be: Santiago Medina Jr. Gregg Garza, Mario Medina, Marco Muñoz, Juan Antonio Cantu and Ruben Cantu.
