Joe P. Villarreal Jr.

Joe P. Villarreal Jr.

Joe P. Villarreal Jr., age 83, peacefully passed away at his home on April 19, 2025, surrounded by his family.  He was born on November 26, 1941, in Brownsville, Texas where he was a lifelong resident and son to Jose Villarreal and Gudelia Pedraza Villarreal of San Pedro, Texas.

Joe or Joseph as many family members call him, was known as a hardworking man, a traditional man who first and foremost provided for his family, a man who visited his mother daily (sometimes twice a day) until she passed.  He did the same for his mother-in-law.  Joseph “era de la gente”, truly an endearing quality.  He was known for his sense of humor, sometimes irreverent and unfiltered, but always on point and relevant.  He was generous and gracious with his kindness.  In truth, Joseph need not be made bigger in death than he was in life.  He was and will be best and lovingly remembered as a good and decent man.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Jose and Gudelia Villarreal and two sisters Lupita Rodriguez and Delfina Villarreal and his son-in-law Jay Mendez.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Margarita Ramirez Villarreal and his three children: Cynthia Villarreal Mendez (Jay), Debbie Villarreal, and Joe “Sonny” Villarreal (Claudia) and three grandchildren, Nicolas (Nico) Mendez, Sarah Villarreal, and Hector Garcia. Additionally, Rick Garza was viewed as a surrogate son by Joe and the family. Joe also leaves behind a very large extended family of in-laws who loved him dearly and deeply valued his friendship and kindness.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 12-7 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 6 p.m.  at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services will conclude at the end of the evening.

Services are under the guidance of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Crematory & Flower Shop. 657 Springmart Blvd., Brownsville, Texas. (956) 350-8485
