Reynaldo Farias

Reynaldo “Nano” Farias, age 82, of Los Fresnos, Texas passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Reynaldo Farias was born in Hargill, Texas and was raised in La Joya, Texas, where he met Darlene, the love of his life. After graduating from La Joya High School, Rey attended Southwest Texas State University on a football scholarship. He was a member of the Lone Star Conference Champions Football Team in 1963. He led in scoring and rushing in the Lone Star Conference from 1961-1965. Rey also earned the number one National Ranking in NAIA National Division in 1963. He was named All American Honorable Mention his senior year in college in 1965.  Reynaldo was also selected to the All-Texas Team in 1964 and was inducted into the T-Association Hall of Honor in 2013. After graduating with Bachelor of Science in Education, Farias went on to play professional football for the San Antonio Toros for three seasons. He was later inducted into the National Hispanic Hall of Fame in San Antonio in 2007 and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

After his professional football career ended, Farias earned a Master’s of Science in Education from Our Lady of the Lake University and began an extensive career as an educator. He got his start in education at South San Antonio ISD where he was a football coach and math teacher for 10 years. He later transferred to Los Fresnos CISD, where he was a football coach, athletic director, math teacher, assistant principal, principal and Director of Maintenance, over a course of 27 years. Rey completed his teaching career at BISD where he taught special education until his retirement in 2009.

Farias served on the Los Fresnos CISD School Board since 2004, serving as President in 2010, when the board was selected as the Region One “Board of the Year” and “Outstanding School Board of Texas”. He retired from the serving on the LFCISD School Board in 2022.

    He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Darlene Young, his mother and father, Tomasa Ruiz Farias and Senobio Farias, his brother, Ruben Farias, his sister and brother in law, Senobia Farias Pena and Federico Pena, mother and father in law, Donald and Donna Young and his brother in laws, John Bradley, Dan Young, and Paz Elizondo.

    He is survived by his three children: Kim (Ruben) Trevino, Kristie (Eddie) Rojas, and Vikki (Mario) Molina; 6 grandchildren: Kayla and Hope Trevino, Alyssa and Tor Rojas and Sienna and Annalise Molina; siblings, Fito (Grace) Farias, Rosa Elizondo; his sister in laws, Elva Farias, Diane Bradley and Peggy Young and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2024 with recitation of The Holy Rosary 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 351 Bowie Street San Benito, Texas with interment following at 11:00 a.m. at Mont Meta Cemetery, San Benito Texas.
