Juan P. Tovar, 79, of Brownsville, TX, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and lifetime musician, peacefully entered into eternal rest at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen on October 19, 2024. He was born on July 30, 1945.
He is preceded in death by his Father Andres Tovar Sr., his mother Martina P. Tovar, his brother Andres P. Tovar Jr., his sister Julia T. Lopez and his granddaughter Angel Hope Perez.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 55 years Rosa Elia Tovar, his son Juan A. Tovar (Gracie), Joel J. Tovar (Juanita), his daughters Isaura Tovar (Jesse Perez) and Joann Tovar. Grandchildren Armando “AJ” and Caleb Tovar, Marco, Diego and Layla Tovar, Adriel and Abrianna Perez, Sakura and Ryu Soto, his sisters Rafaela T. Leal, Evangelina Tovar and his sister-in-law Estella P. Tovar.
Juan worked for PUB and BISD at Canales Elementary where he was known as Coach P. However, his biggest passion was music. His love for music started at the age of 14 when he picked up the bass accompanying his Uncle Panchito Perez. He began his singing professionally with the Conjunto band Los Falcones. In 1971 he founded the band Los Magnificos and in 1980 Juan Tovar y Los Pobres was born. One of his most successful recording efforts was “No Me Se Rajar” which he recorded in 1983 with Falcon Records and ‘El Tren” recorded in 1978 with Freddie Records. Mr. Juan Tovar “es un leyenda de la musica”, till this day Juan Tovar y Los Pobres’ music is well known throughout the conjunto world. He made appearances on the Johnny Canales Show and Aqui Rogelio, he received many awards and recognitions throughout his career, including being inducted into the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame. Juan Tovar served in the United States Army and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2024 from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. with Military Honors at 5:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life at 6:00 p.m. Services will conclude at the end of the evening.
