Juan O. Ponce

Juan Otero Ponce entered into eternal rest peacefully at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 73. He was born in Mexico on May 27, 1951.

Juan’s childhood in Jacala, Hidalgo, fostered a deep, lifelong passion for the outdoors, his family, and helping others, a passion he eagerly shared with anyone who would listen. Juan and his wife Maria first met in Tijuana, Mexico, where they quickly bonded over their shared love of family, fun, and life—a bond they continued throughout their marriage.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Maria Otero de Ponce; his father, Reveriano Ponce Ponce; and his sisters, Amalia Abreo and Victoria Ramirez.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Landin Ponce, and their four children: John Richard Ponce (Ruby Ponce), Elizabeth Ponce-Shull (Daniel Lopez), Francisco Landin Ponce (Emily Lopez), and Joshua Mark Ponce. He is also survived by his other four children: Saul Ponce (Linda Ponce), Teresa Smith (Rick Smith), Ranulfo Ponce (Rosario Ponce), and Griselda Ponce; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024 with recitation of The Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The chapel opens at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment is to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. All friends and family are welcome to attend.
