Larry Putegnat

Larry Putegnat

BROWNSVILLE, TX – Larry Putegnat, 79, of Brownsville, TX, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, the 29th of September 2024, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Larry was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on October 7, 1944. He spent the majority of his life as a Brownsville resident and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1963. Larry was a United States Veteran and served our country in the Army Reserve.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Eleonore Putegnat.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Sharon Stevens Putegnat; his son, Christian Putegnat (Holly) and his daughter, Anna Putegnat Garcia (Samuel); his grandchildren, Brianna, Connor and Kathryn; his sister, Ginger Putegnat; his sister, Beth Noah (Cecil); and his brother, Scott Jackman (Ulanda).

Larry was not a man of many words, but he had a sharp sense of humor and certainly loved sarcasm. One would often hear him jokingly deliver a not so nice “term of endearment” to those he really liked and cared about. With a twinkle in his eye and a slight smirk, you could see him eagerly await the comeback from the “lucky” recipient.

Larry was a creature of habit and when he liked something he stuck to it. He was known for always wearing a cowboy hat, blue jeans and cowboy boots no matter what the occasion. On any given morning, he could always be found sitting at a corner table enjoying a black coffee and reading a book at Toddle Inn or at Denny’s. He always enjoyed a good country western, especially if it was a Louis L’Amour book or an old western on tv.

Larry loved being creative with his hands. When he wasn’t out in the yard, you could find him building something out of wood in his workshop or sketching on an art pad. He was also an animal lover and the local strays somehow new to wander onto the Putegnat property because he would be sure to take them in. You would often find Larry taking care of the family pets, whether it was a pet horse, pet pig or a variety of beloved dogs and cats. Larry also loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and spending time on the water with his family.

Larry loved his family fiercely and was adored by his 3 grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

As per Larry’s request no funeral service will be held. The family will be gathering for a private memorial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made in the form of charitable donations and mailed to: Brownsville Animal Defense, 1740 Old Port Isabel Rd., Brownsville, TX 78521 or online at www.brownsvilleanimaldefense.org

And what a legacy he has left behind. Larry was one of a kind-and when I eat a waffle at Toddle Inn I mentally thank him because he always teased Alex Perez about wanting a waffle for breakfast so Alex bought a waffle baker and you should have seen Larry’s face when he got his waffle! So sorry to know his humor is only a memory now, but know it lives on in his family for sure! Sending a hug to each of you! Caro Lee
