Guadalupe “Lupita” L. González, Ph.D., a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and esteemed educator, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on December 16, 1941, in Brownsville, Texas, Lupita’s life was a testament to her unwavering love, faith, and commitment to her family, community, and education.

An ardent lifelong learner, Lupita earned two Master’s Degrees from the University of Texas – Pan American: one in Counseling and one in Education Administration. She furthered her academic achievements by obtaining a Ph.D. in Multilingual Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She began her career as a dedicated teacher and later served as an administrator at the Brownsville Independent School District, where she made a profound impact over 25 years before retiring.

Lupita was preceded in death by her parents, Matiana Olmos López and Jose López; her two sons, Marcos Mauricio González and Ricardo David González; and her beloved husband of 52 years, Tomás González. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Abelardo O. López, Jose O. López, Juanita L. Collazo, Francisco O. López, and Maria Hortencia L. Molano. She is survived by her siblings Clementino O. López, Julian O. López, Ofelia L. Valdez, and Josefa L. Young.

She is survived by her two children, Tomás A. González, M.D. (wife, Jennifer Almonte González, M.D.), and Matiana “Nena” González Wright, Ed.D.(husband, James Turner Wright, M.D.). Her three beloved grandchildren—Carolina Mia Vela, Tomás Roberto González, and Marcos Luis González—knew her affectionately as “Gigi” and will always treasure her loving and wise presence.

Lupita was celebrated for her kindness, beauty, intelligence, and friendly demeanor. A devoted Catholic, her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and values. Her passion for learning and gardening, alongside spending time with family and friends, combined with her infectious sense of humor and joyful laughter, made her a beloved figure to all who knew her.

Her memory will remain a guiding light for her family and a lasting influence on those she touched through her life’s work.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2024 with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services then will resume on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. and interment is to follow at 1:00 to Buena Vista Burial Park.
