Sylvia Hernández Sierra

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Sylvia Hernandez-Sierra, our beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend was welcomed into the arms of her savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday May 3, 2023, at Valley Regional Medical Center. She was seventy-six years of age.

Sylvia was born in H. Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico on December 17, 1946, daughter of the late Hermilo Hernandez Mendoza and Feliciana “Chanita†Treviño de Hernandez. Sylvia worked at Banco de Comercio until she met the love of her life Enrique Sierra from Brownsville. Sylvia and Enrique got married on April 5, 1975 and she moved to Brownsville, TX, where they raised their two children Vanessa and Enrique “Kike†Sierra.  

A devout Catholic, Sylvia was a parishioner at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church and a true servant of the Lord. Sylvia served her church as a lector and Eucharistic minister for many years.  Beloved grandma and aunt, she was always willing to listen and help her nieces and nephews.

Her favorite pastimes included cooking delicious food for her family and friends.  She enjoyed welcoming family and friends and sharing her table with all her blessings. Sylvia was deeply loved and will greatly be missed by her family and friends and all of those fortunate enough to have known her.

Preceding Sylvia in death was her parents Hermilo Hernandez Mendoza and Feliciana “Chanita†Treviño de Hernandez, stepmother Lucila S. Hernandez, in-laws Armando Sierra and Josefa Peña Sierra, her siblings Yolanda Hernandez-Medrano, Hermilo Jr, and Raul Hernandez.

Survivors include her daughter Vanessa (Roberto Jr.) Lozano, and her son Enrique “Kike†Sierra, her siblings Chanita H. (Sergio) Ruiz, Jesus (Belinda) Hernandez and Lucy H. (Misael) Sanchez, brother in-law Lucio Medrano, sisters’ in-law Sylvia S. Hernandez and Belinda C. Hernandez, her beloved grandchildren Blanca Maricela, Roberto III, Kael Alejandro and Fabiola Vanessa Lozano, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2023, from 1PM to 8PM with a chapel service at 5PM and the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6PM at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

All services will conclude Friday night. As per Sylvia’s wishes cremation will follow.

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Sylvia Hernández-Sierra, nuestra amada madre, abuela, hija, hermana, tía, prima, y amiga fue recibida en los brazos de su Salvador nuestro Señor Jesucristo a la edad de 76 años el miércoles 3 de mayo de 2023 en el Valley Regional Medical Center.

Sylvia nació en H. Matamoros, Tamaulipas, México el 17 de diciembre de 1946, siendo sus padres el Sr. Hermilo Hernández Mendoza y Sra. Feliciana “Chanita†Treviño de Hernández. Sylvia trabajó en el Banco de Comercio hasta que conoció al amor de su vida Enrique Sierra de Brownsville. Sylvia y Enrique se casaron el 5 de abril de 1975 y ella se mudó a Brownsville donde nacieron sus hijos Vanessa y Enrique “Kike†Sierra.

Sylvia era una católica devota, y feligresa de la Iglesia Católica de San Lucas y una verdadera sierva del Señor. Sylvia sirvió a su iglesia como lectora y ministro de eucaristía durante muchos años.  Fue una amada abuela y tía, siempre estaba dispuesta a escuchar y ayudar a sus sobrinos.

Sus pasatiempos favoritos incluían cocinar deliciosos platillos para su familia y amigos.  Disfrutaba dar la bienvenida a familiares y amigos y compartir su mesa con todas sus bendiciones. Sylvia fue profundamente amada y será extrañada por su familia y amigos y todos aquellos que tuvieron la suerte de conocerla.

A Sylvia la preceden en la muerte sus padres el Sr. Hermilo Hernández Mendoza y Sra. Feliciana “Chanita” Treviño de Hernández, su madrastra Sra. Lucila S. Hernández, sus suegros Sr. Armando Sierra y Sra. Josefa Peña Sierra, sus hermanos Yolanda Hernández-Medrano, Hermilo Jr y Raúl Hernández.

A Sylvia le sobreviven su hija Vanessa (Roberto Jr.) Lozano, y su hijo Enrique “Kike†Sierra, sus hermanos Chanita H. (Sergio) Ruiz, Jesús (Belinda) Hernández y Lucy H. (Misael) Sánchez, su cuñado él Licenciado Lucio Medrano, sus cuñadas Sylvia S. Hernández y Belinda C. Hernández, sus amados nietos Blanca Maricela, Roberto III, Kael Alejandro y Fabiola Vanessa Lozano, y numerosos primos, y sobrinos.

El velorio se llevará a cabo el viernes 5 de mayo de 2023, de 1PM a 8PM con un servicio de capilla a las 5PM y el rezo del Santo Rosario a las 6PM en Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Los servicios concluirán al final del velorio. De acuerdo con sus deseos Sylvia será cremada.
