Roy Hugh Cope Jr.

Roy Hugh Cope Jr.

Roy Hugh Cope Jr., 72, of Brownsville, Texas passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2017 at his residence surrounded by loving family. He was born on October 18, 1944 in Dallas, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents Roy Hugh Cope Sr. and Evelyn Walton Cope and his sisters Carolyn Sue Cope Pinkley and Beverly Jean Cope McAlister Rains Cruz.

Roy loved his family very much and was an avid fisherman in Arkansas. During the last 17 years of his life he enjoyed hunting in our beautiful South Texas. He made the deer lease his second home and his hunting buddies were his extended family. He was strong minded and always took any challenge head on. When he was diagnosed with leukemia 2 years ago he did not let the “miserable” cancer take over his love for life. On March 29th of this year the devastating news of a second cancer, “advanced bone cancer”, sent us both on a horrible tailspin. Roy knew then that his days on earth had come to an end and he prepared himself to start the journey to meet Our Father Almighty and Our Lord Jesus Christ. On our last conversation, he said I had a wonderful life, I’m leaving peacefully; but my only regret was that I did not come to South Texas 20 years earlier.

Left to cherish his memory is his two sons Roy Hugh Cope III, Richard Talbert Cope, one step daughter Cassandra Cortez Burnias; siblings Cheryl Ann Cope (Sexton), and James Allen Cope, his wife Marcela Vargas Cope; grandchildren Christina Lee Cope, Brandon Wayne Cope, Kara Michelle Cope, and Alessandra Grey Burnias, and 1 great granddaughter Karalyna Rein James (daughter of Kara).

There will be a memorial service held on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. with military honors at 6:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Services are under the guidance of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory. (956) 350-8485

Marcela we are so sorry to learn of the passing of your husband, Roy. It was such a pleasure meeting him a few years back. Such a pleasant man. I could immediately tell how much he loved you. I know you will miss him dearly. Our heartfelt condolences to you, your daughter and all of his family. Rejoice in the fact that he is no longer in that horrible pain you explained in your postings. May he rest in peace.
