Alejandro “Alex” P. Garcia, 68 beloved husband , father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend entered into the glory of his eternal life on Sunday September 13th 2026.
Alex a native and life time resident of Brownsville, was a proud graduate of Homer Hanna High School class of 1976. After graduation Alex enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served our country for four years. During his tour in the US Navy he married Sylvia Loya, they lived the remainer of his tour in California.
Upon completion of his Naval service Alex and Sylvia returned to the Valley and made Edinburg their home. He attended Texas State Technical College where he graduated as a Certified Operating Technician. He worked at McAllen Medical Center while attending Pan American University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Upon graduation the family moved to San Antonio where Alex attended the University of Texas San Antonio, Dental School. The family decided to return to Brownsville where he began his career in education. He taught Life Science at Perkins Middle School for 10 years. He transferred to Homer Hanna High School where he taught Anatomy and Physiology for 4 years.
After resigning from Brownsville Independent School District , he returned to school at the University of Texas in Brownsville where Alex obtained a Master’s Degree in Education. He continued his education and graduated from the Associated Degree Nursing Program. As an R.N. he worked in surgery at Brownsville Doctor’s Hospital for several years. After leaving BDH he worked as a home health nurse then transferred to Pediatric home health.
Alex’s first love was music, he played guitar, trumpet and keyboard. He played with several bands. He recorded seven original songs with Alley Records. Music and singing were his passion. Alex was preceded in death by his parents Susana and Roberto Garcia; his in-laws, Josefina G. and Jose Loya, a brother in-law Salvador “Sonny” Loya and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of him is his loving and devoted wife of 46 years Sylvia Garcia. His children Alejandro Nicolas, (Priscilla) , Cristina Michelle (Carlos) , Garcia Alcala, Julia Celeste Garcia, the grand children were the apple of his eye: Sunshine and Phoenix Alcala, Moon, Starr, Stormy and Elora Garcia. Alex will be also be missed by his siblings; Roberto ( Maggie) , Richard and Genevieve “Vivi” (Abel) and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members. Alex was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by those fortunate to have known him.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. September 16th at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Military honors will commence at 2pm followed by a celebration of life service. All services will conclude at 4pm. In accordance with Alex’s wishes cremation has taken place as well as organ donation.
