Guadalupe “El Polvo” Olvera III

Guadalupe “El Polvo†Olvera III, passed away May 30, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was an honored Vietnam War Veteran, and an active member of the American Legion. Mr. Olvera went to the University of Houston, were he received his law degree and was an attorney in Brownsville, since 1975. He graduated from Brownsville High School in 1962. He loved playing football and baseball. Because he was a fast runner he was given the nickname “El Polvo”. To most he was known as “Coach Olvera” for he coached an unlimited amount of baseball players in Brownsville. He was most happy making people laugh. He loved telling stories of the past, cracking jokes, had zero filter, and was the most giving man you could meet. He made sure his family was always together for big moments in each other’s lives. He loved traveling the world with his wife and had many stories to tell of his travels, being the avid historian that he was. He was fiercely loved because of who he was as a man. He was so important to everyone who got the chance to know him, and he will be missed.

He is preceded in death by his brother Francisco Rodriguez. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, of 54 years, Yolanda Medina Olvera, his loving mother, Estefana Olvera Rodriguez, and his children, Elizabeth Olvera, Cynthia Olvera, Nicole Olvera, and Guadalupe Olvera IV. Also surviving are his siblings, Angelita San Miguel, Yolanda R. Zamora, Maria Lucia Guerrero, and Ramiro Rodriguez., along with his grandchildren, Arielle Tesia Rojas, Brianna Elise Rodriguez, Abraham Avila, Benjamin Avila, Oliver Olvera and Allison Olvera.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2018, from 1:00-9:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 5:00 p.m. A Chapel service will be held Monday, June 4, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory with burial to follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 43 of Brownsville.
Serving as pallbearers will be Guadalupe Oliver Olvera, Abraham Avila III, Hector Zamarripa, Ramiro Rodriguez, Leo Zamarripa and Ulises Quiroz. Honorary pallbearers: Benjamin Avila, Polo Campos and Oliver Olvera.
