Gustavo Salinas, 93, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father in law, and uncle entered into eternal rest on January 19, 2018 at Valley Regional Medical Center Hospital with family by his side. He was born in Brownsville, Texas on March 24, 1924.
He is preceded in death by his wife Dina Gomez Salinas; his parents Daniel Salinas and Micaela de la Rosa Salinas; his siblings Leonor, Sofia, Josefina, Juanita, Rodolfo, Jose and Fulgencio. Grandpa, as he was affectionally called was a proud Army Veteran having served our country in World War II in 1942-1945. He was a cannoneer in the Battery A957th Field Artillery in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars, and the Victory Ribbon with 3 overseas service bars. He retired in September of 1990 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge at Laguna Atascosa. Left to cherish his memory are his sons Gustavo Jr. (Mary), Miguel (Elena) Alfredo (Belinda, girlfriend), grandchildren Gustavo III (Gloria), Claudia Dina, Jason, Carolina Lourdes; great-grandchildren Gustavo IV, Gavin Oliver, numerous nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lord of Divine Mercy Church with burial to follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Gustavo III, Jason, and his nephews Danny, Johnny, Oscar, and Roy.
