Humberto Castro

Humberto Castro, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026, surrounded by family, after a remarkable 103-year life defined by love, learning, generosity, faith, creativity, and family.

Born on November 18, 1922, in Lima, Peru, Humberto carried a lifelong curiosity, determination, and zest for life that took him far beyond his early beginnings. As a young man, he traveled from Peru to the United States to attend the University of Missouri, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Agronomy. His graduate thesis; focused on milo, or sorghum, reflecting an enduring interest in agriculture and the practical ways knowledge can improve lives.

After completing his studies, Humberto made his home in Brownsville, Texas. His vision, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Semillas de Golfo, Sedelgo, in Mexico, along with other successful business ventures. Through his work, he created opportunity, built lasting relationships, and contributed to the agricultural communities he served. His unyielding drive, thirst for knowledge, and belief in the possibilities of hard work guided him throughout his long and meaningful life.

Humberto’s gifts extended well beyond business and agronomy. He was an accomplished artist, creative director, builder, dancer, and gourmet cook-someone who brought imagination, energy, beauty, and joy to the world around him. He loved travel and embraced each journey as an opportunity to see more of the world, meet new people. and keep learning. He was quick with a joke, had a warm, infectious sense of humor, and never met a stranger. Whether sharing a meal, telling a story, dancing. creating, or simply sitting down with someone new. Humberto had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and at home.

A very deep-rooted faith was the foundation of Humberto’s life. He was actively involved in his community and faith community, giving generously of his time, talents, leadership, and resources. He supported causes close to his heart and helped lead fundraising efforts for La Ciudad de las Niños de Salamanca, Mexico, helping provide care and hope for children and families in need. His faith was not merely something he held; he lived it through service, generosity, compassion, gratitude, and an abiding love for others.

His commitment to education and helping others pursue their potential continues through an endowment established in his name at the University of Missouri’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR). The Humberto Castro Endowment gives students opportunities to pursue their dreams in agriculture-related fields-a fitting legacy for a man whose life was shaped by learning, purpose, and the conviction that education can open doors.

Above all, Humberto cherished his family and friendships. He had a generous heart, a welcoming spirit, and a deep appreciation for the people in his life. His example of devotion, perseverance. creativity, curiosity, humor, faith, and kindness will remain a source of inspiration for all who knew and loved him.

Humberto is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia Leal Castro; his children, Leslie Castro (Jennifer), Humberto Castro, Jr. (Mary), and Jo Anna Ordoñez (Gerardo); his grandchildren, Jonathan, Cristopher, Jose, and Alondra Ordoñez (Lorenzo Diaz), and Alejandro Castro; and his great-grandchildren, Joaquin and Eziah Ordoñez, and Micah Rodriguez. He is also lovingly remembered by many extended family members and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Humberto’s memory to Sunshine Haven Hospice in Olmito, Texas.

Humberto’s life was a testament to the power of faith, education, hard work, service, curiosity laughter, creativity, and love. His legacy will live on in the family he cherished, the communities he strengthened, the students whose aspirations will be supported in his name, and the many lives he touched.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 24^th, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. On Friday, September 25^th, 2026 a funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church following with an inurnment at 1:00 p.m. at Buena Vista Burial Park.
