Celedina Cisneros, a beloved sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and great aunt, began her journey home on Monday, May 11, 2026 after a short but difficult battle with cancer. Celedina was born to Praxedis and Sara Cisneros in Matamoros, Tamaulipas and later became a proud naturalized citizen of the United States.
Sally, as we dearly called her, grew up knowing the value of both a good education and hard work. She worked hard in the fields alongside her siblings while still in Mexico, and once here in the United States, began school and aspired to one day become a teacher. Her dream of doing so, however, was placed on a back burner, for she was withdrawn from middle school in order to work to help support her family. Sally assumed the responsibility given to her with vigor and not only worked at McNair’s clothing company, but she took it a step further and sold Avon as well as admission tickets at The Grande Theater on weekends without regret or complaint because her family always came first. Through hard work and a solid work ethic, Sally quickly ascended in positions and eventually became a line manager in 1972, when McNairs sold its company to Levis Straus. As a manager, Sally took great pride in her work, often working late to ensure her line was in top shape, and she cared deeply for the people she was in charge of, forming strong and enduring relationships with them.
Though she never married, Sally yearned to have a child of her own and eventually adopted her beloved Eloisa. And, while she relished raising her baby girl, Sally, being the loving selfless human being that she was, also cared for her parents until their passing and then did the same for her brother Praxedis Jr., never counting the cost or regretting having done so. Así era Sally…puro corazón.
Sally was a happy soul although at times, could be an ornery ole’ hen, but she was a packaged deal. You couldn’t help but to love her just as she was. She loved the Astros and the Cowboys; win or lose, she was a diehard fan. She also enjoyed playing Lotería with her Lotería group, and every now and then she made the trek up the valley to ‘Las Maquinitas’. Win or lose, she sat at the same Kino machine every time she went.
And though Sally never became a classroom teacher, it was through the school of life that she learned and taught us the most endearing lesson. A woman of strong faith and character with a heart of gold, Sally taught those around her that it was not what you had or what title you held that mattered in life, but that it was what you did for those around you; that the constant ‘wasting’ of yourself on others would one day pave your way to heaven. Gracias Sally por tan bonita lección.
