Hilaria G. Serrata

Hilaria G. Serrata

December 31st, 1928 – March 8th, 2026

Hilaria G. Serrata, 97, from Brownsville, Texas passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on March 8, 2026.

She was born on December 31, 1928, in Rio Hondo, Texas, and daughter of the late Hilario Garcia Sr. and Juanita Ledesma Garcia.

Hilaria will be most remembered for her deep love for God, her unwavering Christian faith, her devotion to family, her selflessness, resilience, and grace. As a homemaker and devoted mother of fourteen children, she spent her life putting others before herself and meeting life’s challenges with strength and dignity. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and love, where every child was cherished. Her greatest pride and purpose were found within the walls of her home, where she built a legacy of family, faith, and enduring love.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Florestela Martinez and Elvira Estrada, and her five brothers, Pedro Garcia, Gregorio “Goyo” Garcia, Jose Garcia Sr., Eliodoro Garcia, and Candelario Garcia. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Macario Serrata Sr., with whom she shared 44 years of marriage.

She is survived by her eight sons: Jose Serrata, Macario Serrata Jr, Jesus Serrata Sr., Juan Serrata Sr., Nicholas Serrata, Luis Serrata, Raul Serrata of Dallas, Texas, and Jose Angel Serrata Sr.; and her six daughters: Oralia S. Gonzalez, Rosalinda S. Cavazos, Maria Elena S. Lopez, Hilaria S. Hernandez, Cristina Serrata, and Belinda S. Martinez. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Hilaria was a faithful member of Good Shepard Catholic Church and served for many years as a dedicated member of the Legion of Mary. Through this ministry, she devoted herself to serving the Church and her community through prayer and apostolic work. She spent countless hours visiting homes and praying for the sick, bringing comfort and hope to those in need. With patience, humor, and steadfast faith, she found great joy in sharing her beliefs with younger generations and guiding them with love.

She also found joy in the simple pleasures of life—tending to her garden, savoring a warm cup of coffee with pan dulce, and losing herself in the pages of the Bible. She cherished quiet moments spent contemplating the beauty of the world around her and expressed her creativity through painting and drawing. Her passions and gentle spirit touched all who knew her, leaving memories that will be forever treasured.

A celebration of Hilaria’s life will be from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. / Rosary @ 6:00 p.m., Monday, March 16, 2026, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory.  Followed on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory, Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church and Interment 11:00 a.m. at Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista and Buena Vista Burial Park.   Her light will continue to shine in the lives she touched.
