Maria Esmeralda Ruiz-Leyva, born on January 30, 1972, peacefully went home to be with the Lord at 12:03 a.m. on February 14, 2026. Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void in our hearts, we find comfort in knowing she is now at peace and free from pain.
Maria was the beloved daughter of Hector and Esmeralda Ruiz, who raised her with love, faith, and strong family values that she carried throughout her life.
She was the cherished firstborn of six children, born in the following order: Maria Esmeralda, Hector Ruiz, Ramiro Ruiz (preceded in death), Moses Ruiz, Jonah Ruiz, and Jacob Ruiz. As the eldest, she naturally embraced leadership and responsibility. She was more than a sister — she was a protector, an example, and in many ways a second mother. Her love for her brothers was fierce, unconditional, and unwavering. She also shared a special bond with her sisters-in-law, Myra, Cindy, and Deana Ruiz, who were blessed to call her family.
Maria was the devoted and loving wife of Daniel Leyva, who stood faithfully by her side through life’s joys and challenges. Their marriage was rooted in love, partnership, and shared faith.
She was known for her joyful spirit and generous heart. Maria was funny, deeply caring, giving, and at times wonderfully stubborn — a reflection of her strength and determination. She had a way of making everyone feel important and loved. Her laughter could brighten any room, and her presence brought warmth and comfort to those around her.
A woman of strong Christian faith, Maria lived her beliefs daily. She trusted God wholeheartedly and faced her illness with courage and unwavering faith. Even during her most difficult moments, Esmeralda remained prayerful and hopeful, inspiring everyone around her. Her life was a testimony of faith in action.
Maria loved to travel and experience new places, embracing life with curiosity and gratitude. Whether exploring somewhere new or simply spending time with family, she treasured creating meaningful memories.
Though her earthly journey ended sooner than we hoped, her love, faith, laughter, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Daniel Leyva; her parents, Hector and Esmeralda Ruiz; her brothers, Hector Ruiz, Moses Ruiz, Jonah Ruiz, and Jacob Ruiz; her sisters-in-law, Myra, Cindy, and Deana Ruiz; eight beloved nieces and nephews; four cherished great-nieces and great-nephew; and many extended family members and dear friends who were blessed by her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Ramiro Ruiz.
The family finds comfort in God’s promise:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
Maria Esmeralda Ruiz-Leyva will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
The visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19th, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a prayer service commencing at 6:00 p.m. Services conclude at the end of the evening.
Services are under the guidance of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Crematory & Flower Shop. 657 Springmart Blvd., Brownsville, Texas. (956) 350-8485

My deepest sympathies to Daniel and her parents, brothers and whole family! From the time I met Esmi in 7th grade and your family welcomed me to your home, it seemed our little group of friends were inseparable. Esmi always had a special place in my heart and now that piece is empty. Even after all these years, she always knew what to say and always ended in prayer to make me feel better. I am grateful that God gave me time to spend with her. You were my sister when I had none and the memories of us will live forever! I will always love you and carry you in my heart! -Belle <3
My dear friend, you left us too soon, but in God’s timing. I met Esmi our freshman year of high school another dear friend, Belinda. We hit it off and yes, our group became inseparable. Even as time went by and we grew into adults, we would make time to go to the beach or just have lunch at her home. We both came back to the Lord around the same time, so we shared Word and prayer , up until she could no longer speak. I love you so much Esmi and you have left a void in my heart. I will always cherish our friendship and I will see you in heaven when my time comes.
My love and condolences to all the family. You were the princess among your brothers and now you have received your crown in heaven. Your last words to me just last week, were “God is faithful” and I will hold on to those words forever.
