Ruby Jean Salas, born on January 24, 1931, in Jasper, Alabama, passed away surrounded by her loving family. Her 93 years were filled with joy, laughter, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee McGuff, Daisy Elizabeth Meadows McGuff; spouse, Antonio “Tony” Salas; sons, Marco Antonio Salas and Charles Sims; siblings, John McGuff, Ralph McGuff, Billy McGuff, Gladys Sue Martin, Bessie Nell Dorman and Alma Sandlin Randolph
Ruby’s warmth, humor, and passion for life leave behind a lasting legacy. She is survived by her Daughters, Obdulia Elizabeth “Liz” Valdez (David) and Sandra Salas Trevino; Brothers, Bobby & James McGuff; Daughters in Law, Rachel Cantu Salas & Angela Sims; Grandchildren, David Lee Valdez (Xchel), Kyle Benjamin Valdez, Rayne Trevino, Peyton Trevino, Marc Sims and Selene Sims and Great Granddaughter, Ember Ceri’ Valdez all of whom were her greatest pride and joy.
Ruby was a woman who embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. She found joy in the simple yet meaningful pleasures of life, such as celebrating Christmas and birthdays with her family, fishing by the water’s edge, and trying her luck with slot machines and college bowl picks. A true artist in the kitchen, Ruby loved cooking and baking, delighting her loved ones with her culinary creations.
An avid fan of the Houston Astros, Ruby rarely missed a game, cheering passionately for her favorite baseball team and she also looked forward to watching the Little League World Series each year, enjoying the excitement and passion of the young athletes on the field. She also enjoyed tuning into Fox News, always keeping up with the latest headlines and sharing her views. Her admiration for President Trump was well-known, as was her love of roses, which brought her much delight.
Ruby had a love for collecting treasures, especially key chains from around the world and anything adorned with elephants. She could often be found reminiscing and sharing heartfelt stories from her life, which captivated her family and brought generations closer together.
Her two favorite dining spots, Whataburger and Luby’s Cafeteria, held a special place in her heart. Whether enjoying a comforting meal or simply savoring a familiar flavor, these places were a testament to her appreciation for life’s little comforts.
Ruby Jean Salas was a true pillar of strength, embodying resilience and a strong work ethic throughout her life. She found immense joy in spending time with her family, always present with unwavering support and guidance for her children and grandchildren. Her warmth and love extended far beyond her immediate family; Ruby Jean had a remarkable way of making everyone feel like family. She was a grandmother not only to her own grandchildren but also to her children’s friends, their kids, and her grandchildren’s friends, sharing her love and kindness with all who came into her life.
Ruby Jean Salas dedicated her professional life to serving others with care and dedication. She worked as a cafeteria manager at BISD, where her warm presence and hard work left a lasting impression. Before that, she honed her skills as a waitress at Fort Brown, she was a PBX Operator at Valley Inn and Country Club and at Brownsville Medical Center all in Brownsville, Texas earning the admiration of colleagues and patrons alike. Her commitment to excellence and hospitality was evident in every role she undertook.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Letty Sierra, Ruby Jean’s devoted caregiver. Letty’s compassionate care and genuine love brought comfort and joy to Ruby Jean, for which the family will always be profoundly grateful. Thank you, to Dr. Juan M Martinez, for his dedication and for being such an important part of our mother’s life for over the past 40 years. His impact will always be remembered with great gratitude.
Ruby Jean Salas will be dearly missed by all who knew her but remembered fondly as a woman of strength, love, and enduring charm. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A celebration of Ruby’s life will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home in Brownsville, Texas where family and friends are invited to share their memories and honor her remarkable life.
