A Loving Tribute to Sofia Atkinson
Sofia Pedraza Atkinson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend, was born on June 13, 1927, in San Pedro, Texas, and entered eternal rest on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at her home in Los Fresnos, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. From an early age, Sofia showed a fierce spirit and a love for life that would define her throughout her years. In the 1940’s, she broke barriers as a pitcher in a women’s Brownsville Baseball league, displaying the same strength and determination that she would carry into all aspects of her life.
In 1949, Sofia married Roberto Atkinson, embarking on a journey that would lead to a beautiful family of six children. Together, they shared countless memories, one of their favorite pastimes was attending “ventas,” where they would look for the next prized cattle.
Sofia’s passion for life was evident in everything she did. Whether she was cheering on her beloved Astros, gathering her large family for get-togethers, or visiting her cherished hometown of San Pedro, she brought joy and warmth to every moment. Her afternoons were often spent playing chalupa with family and friends, and her time with her best friend, Mercedes Gracia, was always filled with laughter and heartfelt conversations.
A firm believer in the importance of health and staying active, Sofia was a shining example of how to live a good life. She understood the value of nourishing both the body and the spirit, and she instilled these principles in those around her.
Sofia leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond her family. She was a woman of bold opinions and taught everyone she met the importance of standing up for oneself and never allowing others to take advantage. Her presence in our lives was a gift, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Though Sofia has left this world, her spirit continues to inspire us. We are comforted by the memories we shared with her and the lessons she taught us. Sofia Pedraza Atkinson’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her loved ones, reminding us to live boldly, love fiercely, and cherish every moment.
She is preceded in death by her husband Roberto Atkinson, a son Roberto Atkinson Jr., and a grandson Willie Joe Atkinson
