Olivia Benavides Hernandez

Olivia Benavides Hernandez, 83, of Brownsville, Texas, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend entered eternal rest to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Fox Hollow Nursing Home surrounded by her family. Olivia was born on May 6, 1940 in Brownsville, Texas.

Olivia was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She always prayed for everyone and made sure she gave her blessing to anyone who visited her. When she was young, she was a migrant worker that worked alongside her family. She traveled and helped her momma with housework and raising her brothers and sisters. She was always a hard worker. For many years her family would travel north to work in the fields. One day, later in life, when she started suffering from Alzheimer’s, upon showing her a picture of herself and being asked “who is that in the photo?” she smiled and replied back, “La más bonita de Lubbock.” And that she was.

She was a strong believer in our Catholic faith and attended Our Lady of Good Counsel since she was young until she could no longer attend due to illness.

As a young mother, she worked at Model Laundry for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Baldomero Benavides and Elena P. Benavides and her brothers: Jesus, Ramon, and Ruben Benavides, sister in law Marylou Benavides and brother in law Roman Muñoz.

Olivia is survived by her husband Rafael Hernandez; her 3 children, Rafael Hernandez Jr. (Nancy Martinez), Raul Hernandez, and a daughter, Connie Perez (Carlos Perez); her 5 grandchildren, Carla, Charlene, Rafael III, Carmen, and Raul Jr.; and her 4 brothers, Baldomero Benavides Jr. (Esperanza), Reyes Benavides, Rodolfo Benavides (Frances), Arnulfo Benavides (Isabel); and her 3 sisters, Gracie Cortez (Genaro), Raquel B Munoz, and Ninfa Benavides.

The pallbearers will be Rafael Hernandez III, Raul Hernandez Jr., Baldomero Muñoz, and other family members.
