Ernesto Garcia passed peacefully on the evening of Sunday, the 17th of September 2023 with his family and loved ones by his side.

Ernesto was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. He began his career working with the Brownsville Independent School District as a teacher and later as a school guidance counselor. He also worked as an assistant professor, teaching for Texas Southmost College. When TSC merged with the University of Texas System in 1992, he became the first Director of Enrollment for University of Texas Brownsville/Texas Southmost College.

Ernesto is survived by his wife Maria Elena Garcia; his children Cristy Ortiz (John), Cindy Rodriguez (Paul), and Daisy Benedict (Michael); and his grandchildren Dylan Mastroianni, Brandon Mastroianni, and Gabriela Oritz. Ernesto is also survived by his siblings Alfredo Garcia and Carolina Garcia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Cruz Alfredo Garcia and Angelica Garcia.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, between the hours of 1:00-8:00 p.m. with the recitation of The Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

    My condollences to Nena and her girls on the loss of Ernesto.
    We go back a long time to our elementary school days at Putegnat
    Cummings, BHS, and Texas Soutmost College and proud members of
    the Class of 63. We all knew him as a hard=working, nonest man who
    loved his family. May he rest in peace and continue to be

    Condolences to the Garcia Family on the passing of my Compadre Ernie.We shared a lot of memories when we taught together at Hanna High School-and as counselors for BISD. May he enjoy eternal peace
