Josefina G. Hernandez

Josefina G. Hernandez, 99, of Brownsville, TX, devoted, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, entered eternal rest peacefully on August 15, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Rosenberg, TX on September 18, 1923.

Over her lifetime, she was a devoted and active member of six Catholic parishes, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, San Juan Diego de Guadalupe Mission, and Christ the King Catholic Church. She was recognized for 50 years as a catechist by the Diocese of Brownsville. As a lay minister, she would not only help her parishes, but also offered her ministry as a hospital volunteer, where she visited the sick and brought Jesus to them through Holy Communion.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Manuel De Jesus Hernandez; her parents, Ramiro and Petra R. Garcia; eight siblings, Guadalupe Garcia, Ramiro Garcia, Rodrigo Garcia, Ignacio Garcia, Rosalia Lujano, Ma del Refugio Paredes, Maria Perez, and Piedad Olazaranth.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Victor Manuel (Noemi) Hernandez, Susana H. (Marco) Castillo, Norma (Gonzalo) Garcia, Gerardo Luis (Blanca) Hernandez, and Oscar Hernandez; eight grandchildren, Marco A. Castillo Jr., Mason A. Castillo, Manuel A. Garcia, Jesus J. Garcia, Laura A. Garcia, Gerardo Hernandez Jr., Bryan Andres Hernandez, Christina Hernandez; three great-grandchildren, Thea, Addie, and Zalo Garcia.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Saturday, August 19, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Funeral procession and Mass of Christian burial will follow at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Christian burial will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.

    My BEAUTIFUL ADORING AUNT. Simply that Heaven above shines as bright or brighter with you in Heaven. I will NEVER forget our family gatherings with you and my cousins( Victor, Susan, Norma, Jerry and Oscar). It was always a treat when our Mother (Piedad- Nena) would advise us to get ready cause Sunday after Mass we were headed to Tia Fina’s House.
    The advise and words that you shared with all of us WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. As I would Always tell you in our talks Tia, YOU ARE AND WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE TIA. I LOVE YOU and Our Lord Jesus Christ has welcomed you with arms wide open along side Your Little Sister La Nena who is there with you. God Bless all your children and grant them the strength to move on and be strong like you. La Amo a Mi Favorita Tia Fina.
