Jose Luis Cavazos

Jose Luis Cavazos

01/13/1978 – 07/20/2023

Good morning! Jose Luis Cavazos, 45, entered eternal rest with the Lord on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Valley Baptist Medical Center -Harlingen, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones. He fought hard but due to unexpected complications lost his brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Juan Jose Cavazos Sr, paternal grandparents Geronimo Cavazos and Lydia Jimenez, and maternal grandfather, Carlos Castro.

Jose Luis was born in Brownsville, TX, on January 13, 1978, to Angelita and Juan Jose Cavazos. He was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Jose loved to spend time with his family, friends that became family, and all his coworkers. He was a Batman fanatic and the 2023 Pace ECHS Teacher of the Year. Jose enjoyed fishing, the shooting range, watching anime cartoons, DC and Marvel movies, reading comic books, listening to music, and cooking the most delicious BBQ meals. He had fun traveling as a chaperone with school events, trainings, and with family. However, his passion was supporting his sons and family unconditionally.

Upon graduating from Porter HS, he attended TX A&M College Station. He later began his career in IT and traveled across North and South America to various countries such as Mexico, Chile, and Peru. His family’s passion for teaching allowed him to transition to the educational field easily. He began and finished his teaching career as a CTE teacher and department chair at Pace ECHS with Brownsville ISD. He was dedicated to assisting students and staff with educational and technology needs. His heart filled with joy when his former students reached out with appreciation for his impact on their lives, to share their accomplishments in college or the workforce. He was a lifelong learner and attended ongoing trainings to better serve his students in IT and cybersecurity. He was currently attending online university courses to further his education.

Everyone who was blessed to know him and who got close to him had the pleasure of discovering that he was an amazing person with a beautiful soul and a big heart full of laughter and jokes. God allowed us to share our lives with the best brother, son, husband, and friend.

He always strived to help others in need. He loved to make people smile and always greeted everyone along his path with “Good morning!†regardless of the time of day. He was always willing and ready to assist anyone with computer, plumbing, electrical, car repairs, or other projects. He took pride in donating blood and bone marrow to help others in need.

Left to cherish his memory forever is his loving family: mother Angelita C. Cavazos, maternal grandmother Elida H. Castro, wife Melissa Ann Cavazos, sons Carlos Manuel

Cavazos and Gabriel Adrian Rodriguez, his brother Juan Roberto (Alicia) Cavazos, sister Perla Isabel Guerrero, niece Marianna Cavazos, mother in-law Teresa (Martin) Molina, brother in-law Fabian (Avangi) Molina, maternal uncles Pablo A. (Carolina), Jose F. (Maricela), Carlos A. (Susana), Juan M. (Ana) Castro, aunts Anna M. (Patrick) Gabbert and Rafaela A. (Martin) Morales, paternal uncles Guadalupe (Maria) Cavazos, Walter (Dora) Cain, Jr., Fernando (Maria), Filiberto, Mauro Hernandez, and numerous extended family members, and friends.

Also cherishing Jose’s life is his family at heart, lifelong best friend Nick (Nancy) Caldwell, Obed Leal, Claudia (Jorge) Hernadez, Oneil (Mary) Cuevas, Juan (Cheli) Moran, Adam (Jamie) Shoupe, Leticia (Chava) Maldonado, Jennifer (Sergio) Moore and Gloria (Noe) Garcia. Thank you for loving him unconditionally, caring for him at work, in trainings, at the hospital, and for the cherished memories.

He will be forever remembered and greatly missed for his heart of gold, intelligence, positive outlook, resilience in life’s challenges, unique sense of humor, and sarcasm.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Pablo Castro, Jose Castro, Gabriel Rodriguez, Carlos Manuel Cavazos, Adam Shoupe, Jorge Hernandez, Oniel Cuevas, and Juan Moran.

Honorary pallbearers are Juan Roberto Cavazos, Obed Leal, Nick Caldwell, Jose G. Cavazos, David Cavazos, Patrick Gabbert, and Nick Soto.

I was saddened to learn of José Luis’ passing. He was a student of mine at both Cummings and Porter, plus he competed in my math team for several years.
Part of the time I was at Porter, I was in charge of a computer lab and José became my unofficial lab assistant. He was a truly remarkable man. My prayers go out to his family.

May the Lord comfort the family and those who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with them.
