Melquiades “Cale” De La Rosa

Melquiades “Cale†De La Rosa, 89, of Brownsville, TX, devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend entered into eternal rest on July 18, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Dolores and Norberto De La Rosa; two brothers, Manuel De La Rosa and Higinio De La Rosa.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Julia De La Rosa; children Charlie De La Rosa (Julie), Jimmy De La Rosa (Stacy), PhD., Diana G. Pohl (Federico), and Esther Farrias Magallanes; 4 grandchildren Daniel L. De La Rosa, Julia M. De La Rosa, Isabella Wish, and Mia Clover; siblings Maria Luisa Trueba, Rafael De La Rosa, and Rosie Maza.

Mr. De La Rosa was a wonderful husband, a dedicated father, a proud and loving grandfather, and a Veteran who served his Country. “Cale†as everyone knew him by, met the love of his life, Julia, in 1958 in Brownsville, at Texas Southmost College after returning home from serving in the U.S. Army. Together they formed a family and raised 3 wonderful Children. Cale was a natural born leader, entrepreneur and hardworking husband who worked at various businesses in town that included BISD warehouse dept., Custom and Immigration at B&M bridge. “Cale†and Julia volunteered for many years as Auxiliaries at the Valley Baptist Medical Center, greeting, welcoming and assisting guests as they walked in to the Hospital.  He also founded and operated his own Credit company. He dedicated his life to working hard and encouraged his children instilling in them a successful academic education. He enjoyed playing golf, going to the beach, BBQ-Ing and socializing with family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 1 PM to 8 PM on Saturday, July 23, 2022, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary being at 6 PM at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services will conclude at the end of the evening.

Inurnment of Ashes and Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022 at the Rio Grande Valley Veteran’s State Cemetery.

The family would like to express their appreciation and a special thanks to the teams of healthcare professionals who cared for Mr. De La Rosa and demonstrated compassion during these last few weeks and year. Especially Dr. Ahmad Karkoutly, Dr. Kalim Habet and Dr. Danilo Asase.

Services are under the guidance of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Crematory & Flower Shop.

    My sincere condolences to Julia and the the De La Rosa Family. I only wish I lived close enough to attend the Holy Rosary with other friends. Prayers for all of you.
