Roberto Leal

Roberto Leal

Roberto Leal, age 87, went to be with the Lord on December 22, 2020 while surrounded by his children at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville. Hermano Roberto (as he was lovingly called) lost his sight at the age of 32; however, he stood firm in his faith and was courageous and strong. He battled various medical issues in recent years but continued showing his resilience when faced with life’s challenges and maintained his smile to the end.

Up until it was physically impossible for him to be present at worship, he was always at church before anyone else, sitting in his favorite pew patiently waiting for services to begin. Without fail he would end every service by audibly declaring, “Dios me los bendiga a todos†(“God bless everyoneâ€). Brother Leal will be remembered as a man of faith with a strong prayer life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Isidoro Leal, Felipa Garza de Leal, sister Evarista Garate and stepbrother Felipe Leal Zarate.  Left behind to cherish his memory are his daughters Felipa (Manuel) Gamez, and Eva (Omar) Ortiz, and son, Roberto Leal Jr. He also leaves behind his precious grandchildren, Dr. Brenda (Dr. Marc) Patience, Manuel Roberto Gamez, Omar Joseph Ortiz, Amanda Kristin Ortiz, Alissa Isabella Ortiz, Gage Hendricks, and great-grandchildren Joshua Aaron Patience and Lucas Alejandro Patience.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 28th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home (657 Springmart Blvd). A Prayer Service will follow on Tuesday, December 29th, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Price Road Church of Christ (2434 E. Price Road). COVID-19 protocols will be followed; however, for those unable to attend in person, the service will also be broadcast on Facebook Live. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Brother Roberto’s name to the Price Road Church of Christ.
