Gloria C. Gutierrez

Gloria C. Gutierrez, 91, of Brownsville, TX, entered into eternal rest on March 1, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her loving family and providers.

She was born in McAllen, TX, raised in Mercedes, TX until 1952 – when she relocated to Brownsville, TX. There she met Federico Gutierrez and were married on August 4, 1957.

Gloria Gutierrez was a devoted wife, who loved her husband deeply as evidenced in her story-telling of when they first met. She oftentimes said that one would obtain marital bliss if their partner could dance in good times and in bad. She was a mother who exemplified hospitality and generosity. Her children cannot remember a time where she had rejected a visitor or that she let someone leave their home without having fed them. (Some of her best dishes were tacos, Mexican rice, Frijoles a la charra, papas con carne, carne guisada, fideo, calabazita, chicken, and meatloaf; served with sweet tea.) She was generous with her time, finances, and gifts. She was a doting grandmother and great-grandmother: blessing her grandchildren with wisdom, time, love, laughter, and sometimes stern admonishment. She would call them “chulos,†“hermosos,†and “pobre inocentes.†She spent a lot of time in prayer for them, asking God to protect them and guide them; she’d pray that God would set apart their spouses and bless them. She was loyal to Mercedes, TX: her daughter can tell you stories about her breaking into cheers of “Oh Mercedes!†while driving to Mercedes, when arriving, but more solemnly as she left Mercedes to return home. She enjoyed long drives because it allowed her the time to reminisce about her childhood – great times with her brothers and sisters – and to enjoy “the beauty that is Texas.â€

She was preceded in death by her father, Estanislao Carranza, her loving husband, Federico Gutierrez; and parents, Flora and Vivian Benjamin Perez. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Roberto (Susan) Gutierrez, Rodolfo (Teresa) Gutierrez, Rogelio (Marina) Gutierrez, and Gloria (Mark) Schlatter; brothers: Jesus M. Perez, Vivian D. Perez, and Rolando A. Perez; sisters: Martha E. Cavazos, Berta A. Perez, Dora E. Eason, and Maria de los Angeles (Mary) Kolb. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren: Susane Hirschmann, Federico Gutierrez, Cristina Petrarca, Jenny Miertschin, Hannah Sargeant, Jade Tijerina, Joshua Tijerina, Jeanell Tijerina, Robert Gutierrez, Matthew & Rebekah Schlatter; great-grandchildren: Tatiana, Katalina, and Samuel Petrarca; Federico & Sofia Gutierrez; Lola, Moses, & Selah Miertschin; Janae & Jenissa Anderson.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2020, from 1:00 – 9:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 8:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory.

A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home at 10:00 AM with burial to follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.

Funeral Services have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory-Flower Shop. 657 Springmart Blvd., Brownsville, Texas. (956) 350-8485

Gloria, my deepest condolences to you and your family. She was a beautiful and wonderful lady. I enjoyed her conversations you and her had on Facebook. I always told you that she reminded me of my mom. She will truly be missed. But we know that she has gone home to rest. The place where their will be no sickness or pain, she is now in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. Love you Gloria and I pray for the peace of God to be upon all of you. See you Wednesday.

Gloria Gutierrez, your Mom was always a wonderful choir parent for this young, first-year music teacher for Russell & Skinner Elementary schools back in 1975.
