Arcadio “Art” Guajardo Jr.

Arcadio “Art” Guajardo Jr.

Arcadio “Art†Guajardo Jr., devoted husband, brother, friend and mentor, passed into our Lord’s hands on January 6, 2019 at Brownsville’s Valley Baptist Medical Center.  He is preceded in death by his father, Arcadio Guajardo Sr., and mother, Sofia Leal Guajardo. Art is survived by his wife, Mary; sisters, Lidia Mock and Elizabeth (Tom) Dunn as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Arcadio “Art†Guajardo dedicated his entire life to music education. While he felt most at home on the podium, he was also a highly respected clinician and adjudicator. Mr. Guajardo was known as a teacher’s teacher, a master teacher that mentored and guided countless young and seasoned music educators throughout his entire career. Upon graduating from PSJA High School in 1954, Arcadio’s love of music lead him to Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois where one of his teachers, H.E. Nutt, nicknamed him “Art.†Although he stayed in contact with his family back home, Mr. Guajardo did not return or see his family until he graduated in 1958 when Robert Vezzetti hired him as a junior high band director in Brownsville, Texas. Except for a brief time in Edinburg, Brownsville was to become Art’s home. In 1974 Art was named as head director for the Hanna High School Golden Eagle Band where he would remain until his retirement in 1998. In 1976, Art married his love, Mary who would become his most ardent fan and companion for the next 42 years.

During this time, Art’s baton would direct one of the most respected band programs in the entire country, “The Internationally Known Hanna Golden Eagle Band.†The Hanna Band would go on to perform throughout Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Chicago and Florida under Mr. Guajardo’s direction. Art’s performances were known for the artistry and tapestry of orchestral textures and colors that he would produce. His reputation garnered him numerous awards and accolades including membership in to the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame and the Rio Grande Valley Bandmaster Hall of Fame. Mr. Guajardo did not view himself as a strict disciplinarian but rather someone with high expectations of himself and his students and taught them never to settle for mediocracy. Although best known for his musical band performances and his in-depth knowledge of music interpretation, he will also be remembered for his generosity with the time he took to help others. Just a few weeks before his passing, Art was still organizing a list of band programs that had contacted him for help. After his retirement, Art continued to work with various band programs and co-directed Brownsville Wind Symphony with Albert Lo. A very private person, he was fiercely proud of his students, many of whom followed in his footsteps as band directors while others became community leaders, doctors and successful professionals. We bid farewell to a friend, mentor and musical giant.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 11, 2019 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Services have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home at 657 Springmart Blvd. Brownsville, Texas (956) 350-8485. Burial will take place at a later date out of town.

My first 4 years of teaching were spent teaching at Brownsville High School later to be named Hanna High School. Right from day one Art Guajardo took me under his wing so to speak. Art and I lived in the same apartment complex and would talk hours about bands and rehearsal techniques. I would ride with Art up and down the Rio Grand Valley as he would clinic other bands in the Valley. While driving home from the many clinics Art would quiz me about the rehearsal I had just watched. Just to make sure that I “got it”. Later on Art would let me clinic with him as we traveled the RGV. It is amazing the memories that are flashing in and out of my head of this master teacher.
One of my favorite nights Art and I drove to Kingsville and the campus of Texas A & I University to attend a piano concert being given by Victor Borge. Driving to the concert we talked bands on the long drive back to Brownsville we laughed all the way home.
Art was not only my teacher, mentor but my friend.
RIP my friend. See you on the other side.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Guajardo during my tenure as Administrator of Fine Arts for BISD. He was an incredible individual with amazing talent. He gave so much to the band program and to the community of BISD. He will always be admired and never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Mr. Guajardo was my first music teacher at Skinner Elementary circa 1960.First time I see him he is driving this cool Italian sports car and I thought he was someone I could aspire to be like.He took this poor kid from the barrió, with a $10 trumpet and made a musician out of him. For the rest of my life I have been involved in music and he was the one person who started me on this musical journey.A true hero to many kids, he is now playing in the Lord’s band.Thank you Art
