Alicia V. Putegnat


Alicia V. Putegnat, 83, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born in Brownsville on July 25, 1934 and lived her entire life here.
She worked in the banking industry for 37 years where she helped many business owners in the Brownsville area and helped give many the support they needed to get their business started. Her clients would say that she had been the epitome of professionalism and friendliness. She also was involved in many civic and community organizations, as well as member of many boards.
Alicia was a very devout Catholic. She spent much time helping out the Brownsville Catholic diocese by raising money for repairs for churches, the needs of nursing home, helping the underprivileged and was eventually awarded the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre for such deeds in 2007.
Mrs. Putegnat will always be remembered for her love of travel, music and dance. Those who knew her would agree that it can be said that Alicia did the extraordinary in an ordinary way and more importantly she did the ordinary in a most extraordinary way.
Alicia was preceded in death by her beloved husband Barry B. Putegnat Sr.; her parents, Leo and Dolores Vergott; sisters Mary Serrata, Victorine Galvan; brothers Leo Vergott and Henry Vergott. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Javier (Nancy) Vera, Alicia (Robert) Duran, Maria (Abel) Hinojosa; grandchildren Adam Vera, Kiley (Austin) Jeffery, Dana Vera, Abel Hinojosa IV, Sabrina Hinojosa, and Samuel Hinojosa. Also surviving are 5 step children, Marcia (Bobby) Vogelsang, Barry (Georgina) Putegnat Jr., Georgia (Jorge) Arribau, David (Hedy) Putegnat and Danny Putegnat as well as 9 step grandchildren.
The family would like to give special recognition and thanks to Carlota Banda who helped her and the family for many years. They were much like sisters.
There will be a memorial service held on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
