Maria Yolanda Contreras

Maria Yolanda Contreras “Yayaâ€, 86, entered the Lord’s heavenly kingdom on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Valley Baptist Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on August 26, 1929 in Veracruz, MX and was a long time resident of Brownsville, TX. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
She is preceded in death by her grandson, Pablo Lara; her great grandson, Emmanuel Salas Noyola; and son-in-law, Joaquin Salvador Galvan.
Surviving to cherish her loving memory are eight children, Rosalba (Santos) Cuellar, Abraham Ricardo (Leticia) Benavides, Yolanda (Guillermo) Castillo, Ofelia (Joaquin+) Galvan, Jesus Javier (Patricia) Contreras, Elizabeth (Brigido) Noyola, Michelle (Jorge) Estrada-Sanchez, and Johanna (Angel) De La Garza; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Paulino Contreras Calderon and Maria Elena Contreras Calderon. She is also survived by her grand-fur baby, Shadow, who will miss her constant feedings.
Yayita is remembered for her sense of adventure, strength, humanitarianism, selflessness and love for her family. She loved to dance and taught many of her grandchildren her rhythm and dance moves. She enjoyed fishing and loved to go to the beach and be near water. She would rejoice in the accomplishments of her family and always encouraged them to pursue an education and love life. She was fond of having her grandchildren and great grandchildren visit and she would lovingly (gently) bite their cheeks or chins to show her affection.
She was a midwife for over 3 decades and delivered over ten thousand babies in Brownsville and Matamoros. In the 1970’s she was very involved in community politics and supported many campaigns for local representatives. In 1977, as a result of her extensive experience as a Midwife, she was appointed as the Educational Director of Midwifery and officially retired in 1993. Yolanda was a jack-of-all-trades, and inspiration to all of her family members & friends and her fierce perseverance led her to her many accomplishments throughout her life.
Yaya touched the lives of many; she was our family’s fearless matriarch and will be greatly missed, but she will reside in our hearts forever. We graciously welcome the community to join us in celebrating her life.

María Yolanda Contreras “Yaya”, entró al reino celestial del Señor el miércoles, 10 de febrero del 2016 en el Valley Baptist Medical Center a la edad de 86 años, rodeada por su querida familia.
Nació el 26 de agosto del 1929 en Veracruz, Veracruz, MX y fue residente de Brownsville, TX. Yayita fue una gran madre, abuela, hermana y amiga.
Es precedida en la muerte por su nieto, Pablo Lara; su bisnieto, Emmanuel Salas Noyola y su yerno, Joaquín Salvador Galván.
Le sobreviven ocho hijos, Rosalba (Santos) Cuéllar, Abraham Ricardo (Leticia) Benavides, Yolanda (Guillermo) Castillo, Ofelia (Joaquín ) Galván, Jesús Javier (Patricia) Contreras, Elizabeth (Brígido) Noyola, Michelle (Jorge) Estrada-Sánchez y Johanna (Ãngel) De La Garza; 19 nietos, 21 bisnietos, 2 tátara-nietos y 2 hermanos, Paulino Contreras Calderón y María Elena Contreras Calderón. También le sobrevive su fiel compañero, Shadow (perrito), que extrañara su cariño y atención.
Yayita será recordada por su valentía, fortaleza, caridad y perseverancia. Su mayor orgullo era su familia y siempre les inculco el amor y la unión familiar. Solía tener a sus nietos y bisnietos de visita y les mostraba su cariño mordiendo suavemente sus mejillas o barbillas. Amaba la música y les enseñó a sus nietos su ritmo y pasión por el baile. Disfrutaba la pesca, ir a la playa y estar cerca del mar. Le encantaba viajar y unos de sus lugares preferidos era Las Vegas.
Fue partera durante más de tres décadas y trajo al mundo a mas de diez mil bebés en Brownsville y Matamoros. Hubo una época en la cual recibió mas partos que ni el mismo hospital de Brownsville. En 1977, como resultado de su extensa experiencia como partera, fue nombrada como Directora Educativa de Partería y se jubilo oficialmente en 1993.
Yolanda fue una gran guerrera e inspiración para todos los miembros de su familia. Su firme perseverancia la llevó a lograr muchos éxitos a lo largo de su vida.
Yolanda ha tocado la vida de miles de personas en toda nuestra comunidad; ella fue la matriarca de nuestra familia y se le extrañara mucho.
