Went into eternal rest on February 5, 2016 with his loving family surrounding him.
Born: May 24, 1943 in Brownsville, Texas
The 3rd Child, 1st Born Son, to Mauricio G. Martinez Fuentes and Dora S. Martinez De Luna Barrera

In the 50’s Mauricio was involved with Estudiantina, Missionary work with the Catholic Church, volunteering when the Church or school needed volunteers. This is the time the Mauricio developed his passion for the Guitar. In May 1961 he graduated from St. Joseph Academy.
Mauricio enlisted in the United States Air Force in September 1961 till 1969. Station: Germany, Peyote Air Force Base, Johnston Island Air Force Base, Miles City Air Force Station, and Laredo Air Force Base
After serving with USAF he began his journey with the Scrap Metal Business. He joined Luria Brothers Scrap Metal Company, and when Luria Bros left the Port of Brownsville he was able to purchase the Port of Brownsville site and established Gulmar, Inc.
Mauricio played a role in the Bilingual Education Movement in the 1970’s as well as a First Aid Trainer. He supported and sponsored the First Brownsville Girls’ Softball Little League in 1974 with the Maroon Gulmar Team, Gray Gulmar Team and Blue Gulmar Team.
Mauricio was a member of Immaculate Conception Cathedral and St. Joseph’s Church. He participated in The Propeller Club, Port of Brownsville, Crime Watcher, and various Boards and Clubs.
Mauricio had a passion for Music, different genres. From Trio Reyes, Ponchos Trios, Raphael, Jose Jose, Earth Wind and Fire, Fleetwood Mac, the 1970’s music, boleros and various music. He enjoyed Audio Books as he would travel to work and home.
Mauricio had a generous heart and caring soul. He would try to lend a helping hand when someone needed on.
Mauricio is survived by: His wife of 53 years, Polly M Martinez, his children, Pollyana M Diaz (Larry), Sofia M Riquelme (Jorge), Carlos M Martinez (Elvia), and Diana M Roman († Abdon). Grandchildren: Samantha Sophia Sustaeta, Lauro Steven Diaz, Mauricio Daniel Diaz, Pollyana Julia Diaz, Nicholas Alexander Roman, Hunter Diana Roman, Mauricio Martinez, Tabitha Teresa Tapia, AnaFernanda Martinez, Amadeo Antonio Tapia III, Christopher Thomas Roman, Katherine Isabella Roman. Great-Grandchild: Izzabella Marie Diaz. Siblings: Doris Adams (Edward), Rosalinda Stone (Robert), Carlos Martinez (Victoria). Aunt/God-Mother Mary Isabel Schoenmaker as well as many cousins and extended family members.
A memorial service will be held today, February 8, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a rosary at 8:00 p.m. and military honors at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory located at 657 Springmart Blvd., Brownsville, Texas. Celebration of Life Mass, February 9, 2016, will be at St. Mary, Mother of the Church at 11:00 a.m., 1914 Barnard Road, Brownsville, TX 78520. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Sunset Funeral Home & Crematorium.

    On behalf of Dan Flores’ family and AISI employees, we send our most sincere condolences to all of Mauricio Martinez’s family. Mauricio was a dear friend of mine and I am deeply saddened that he is no longer with us. May the good Lord bring the comfort to everyone’s heart to help you fill the emptiness that you are feeling today. I will keep you in my prayers.
