Don Ricardo Francisco Roca passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 16, 2022, at the age of 93.

“Do something to change the world”, was the last advice of Don Ricardo Roca to his grandson Scott Roca Tipton, on his deathbed, the words of a man who arrived as a crew member from Ecuador to stay in the city of Brownsville, Texas where he leaves an admirable legacy for his perseverance and struggle in life, who arrived as “El Nino Polizonte” and became an important businessman in this town and who today says goodbye.

Don Ricardo Roca was born on November 20, 1928 in Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador and arrived on the ship Orión in 1958 at the age of 30 in the city of Port Isabel, Texas.

He started working as a welder at the Marine Mart shipyard in Port Isabel and over time with his hard and constant work he managed to have his own construction and repair company for commercial shrimp boats where his good performance and workmanship not only placed him as one of the most important port businessmen of this town;  but also forged a reputation together with his whole family who were involved alongside him in daily work, building 326 shrimp boats and generating hundreds of jobs for more than 40 years, becoming a major driver in the growing economy of the Port of Brownsville.

Even without knowing him, a person talking to Don Ricardo will confirm that he was a man of wisdom and humility, putting all his trust in them. He learned this as a child through his mother to keep his arms open for those who need it.

He was a man grateful to God for everything received, gained and lost. In the reflection of his book entitled “El Niño Polizonte”, where he narrates his life in 2008, Don Ricardo Roca states that he always missed his family from which he had to move away to escape poverty and He always longed for his closeness and affection, what marked his life. And that was perhaps what he set out to build “a familyâ€, which he formed together with his wife Mauricia Roca.

Don Ricardo had six children, two from a first marriage, Blanca Cantú and Berta Roca. Later, with Doña Mauricia Roca, he had four more children, Adalberto Roca, Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton, (Vice President of the Brownsville ISD Board of Trustees), Dr. Ricardo Franciso Roca and Max Eric Roca, whom they raised full of love, with values ​​and with the mindfulness that work dignifies and education is the best inheritance left to a child.

Don Ricardo had a difficult but full life, with ups and downs, but with more satisfaction and recognition within his family and outside of it, just by mentioning his name it was known that it spoke of perseverance and struggle through effort to get ahead.

Don Ricardo’s faith was very important to him, and he showed it through his loyalty to the church by attending mass: 40 years at St. Mary’s Mother of Church and 15 years at Bella Vista Church. Don Ricardo Roca was also a deacon, school teacher, and president of the Bella Vista church board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maximino Francisco Roca Farfán and Martina Villavicencio de Roca; and eight brothers and sisters from Ecuador, South America: brother Vicente Alfredo Muñoz Roca Villavicencio (Italy Scaldaferry+), sister Olga María Roca Villavicencio, sister Isabel Roca Villavicencio, brother José Luis Roca Villavicencio, brother Luis Enrique Roca Villavicencio, brother Elias Roca Villavicencio, sister Martina Roca Villavicencio, and sister Gregoria Maria Roca Villavicencio de Larrea (Cesar Larrea Campaign+).

He is survived by his wife, Mauricia, and six children: daughter Blanca Cantú (Gilbert Jr.) of Brownsville; daughter Berta Roca of Corpus Christi; son Adalberto Roca (Deisy Edith) of Brownsville; daughter Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton of Brownsville; son Dr. Ricardo Francisco Roca (Griselda) from San Antonio; and his son Max Eric Roca of Brownsville; He is also survived by his 13-grandchildren: Scott Roca Tipton, Adaleisy Edith Roca, Ricardo Francisco Roca III, Camila Isabel Roca, Lizette Cantu, Denise Gonzalez (Guadalupe), Gilbert Cantu III (Elizabeth), Brenda Cantu, Angela Gonzalez, Cassandra Rhines ( Dexter), Lianeth Alexandra Lozano, Cindy Olivares (Víctor) and Alexis Cantú; and 15-great-grandchildren: Victoria Ruelas, Amari Bravo, Alexander Bravo, Gael Gonzalez, Gabriela Gonzalez, Gianna Cantu, Gilbert Cantu, Giuliana Cantu, Reginald Clark, Ryan Cantu, Jazmine Anderson, Isaiah Rhines, Kamiyah Rhines, Sofi Olivares, and Sant Olivares.

He is also survived by his two brothers and one sister from Ecuador, South America: sister Mercedes Elena Roca Villavicencio de Ayauca (Colón Ayauca+), brother Virgilio Roca Villavicencio, and Brother Luis Antonio Roca Villavicencio (Piedad); as well as 43 nieces and nephews from Ecuador; and more than 60 grandnieces and grandnephews from Ecuador.

Good job Don Ricardo, God is already opening the gates of heaven to the “Niño Polizonte†of Brownsville! Rest in Peace Don Ricardo Roca.

Visitation will take place on Friday, January 21, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The vigil will continue on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The procession will start at 9:30 a.m. to celebrate Mass of Christina Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Mother of Church. Services will conclude at the end of Mass. The pallbearers will be Adalberto Roca, Dr. Ricardo Francisco Roca, Max Eric Roca, Scott Roca Tipton, Gilberto Cantu and Gilberto Cantu Jr.

“Haz algo para cambiar el mundoâ€, fue el último consejo de Don Ricardo Roca a su nieto Scott Roca Tipton, en su lecho de muerte, las palabras de un hombre que llego como un tripulante proveniente de Ecuador para quedarse en la ciudad de Brownsville, Texas en donde deja un admirable legado por su perseverancia y lucha en la vida, que llego como “El niño polizonte†y se convirtió en un importante hombre de negocios de esta localidad y que hoy dice adiós.

Don Ricardo Roca nació un 20 de Noviembre de 1928 en Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador y arribó en el barco Orión en 1958 a la edad de 30 años en la ciudad de Puerto Isabel, Texas.

Empezó trabajando como ayudante en el astillero Marine Mart en Puerto Isabel y al paso del tiempo con su arduo y constante trabajo logró tener su propia empresa de construcción y reparación de barcos camaroneros en donde su buen desempeño y mano de obra le colocó como uno de los mas importantes empresarios portuario de esta localidad que no solo lo consolidó, sino que forjó un renombre junto con toda su familia que se involucraban a la par con él en las labores diarias, construyendo 326 barcos camaroneros y generando cientos empleos por más de 40 años, convirtiéndose en un importante detonador en la creciente economía de el Puerto de Brownsville.

Cuando aún sin conocerle, una persona hablaba con Don Ricardo se podía constatar que era un hombre de sabiduría y humildad, cuyo trato sencillo brindaba confianza, aprendió desde niño través de su madre a mantener abiertos sus brazos para quien lo necesitará.

Era un hombre agradecido con Dios por todo lo recibido, lo ganado y lo perdido. En la reflexión de su libro titulado “El Niño Polizonteâ€, donde narra su vida en el año 2008, Don Ricardo Roca manifiesta que siempre le hizo falta su familia de la cual tuvo que alejarse por fuerza mayor y siempre añoro su cercanía y cariño, lo que marco su vida. Y fue quizá eso lo que se propuso hacer “Una familia†la cual formo junto a su esposa Mauricia Roca.

Don Ricardo tuvo seis hijos, dos en un primer matrimonio, Blanca Cantú y Berta Roca. Posteriormente con Doña Mauricia Roca procreo a cuatro hijos mas, Adalberto Roca, Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton, (vicepresidenta de la mesa directive de Brownsville ISD), Dr. Ricardo Roca y Max Eric Roca, a quienes criaron llenos de amor, con valores y con la conciencia de que el trabajo dignifica y la educación es la mejor herencia que se deja a un hijo.

Don Ricardo tuvo una vida difícil pero plena, con altas y bajas, pero con más satisfacciones y reconocimientos dentro de su familia y fuera de ella, con solo mencionar su nombre se sabía que se hablaba de la perseverancia y la lucha a través del esfuerzo para salir adelante.

La fe de Don Ricardo era muy importante para él, y lo demostró a través de su lealtad a la iglesia asistiendo a misa: 40 años en la Iglesia St. Mary’s Mother of Church y 15 años en la Iglesia Bella Vista. Don Ricardo Roca también fue diácono, maestro de escuela y presidente de la junta de la iglesia Bella Vista.

Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Maximino Francisco Roca Farfán y Martina Villavicencio de Roca; y ocho hermanos y hermanas de Ecuador, Sudamerica: hermano Vicente Alfredo Muñoz Roca Villavicencio (Italia Scaldaferry+), hermana Olga María Roca Villavicencio, hermana Isabel Roca Villavicencio, hermano José Luis Roca Villavicencio, hermano Luis Enrique Roca Villavicencio, hermano Elias Roca Villavicencio, hermana Martina Roca Villavicencio, y hermana Gregoria Maria Roca Villavicencio de Larrea (Cesar Larrea Campaña+).

Le sobreviven su esposa, Mauricia, y seis hijos: su hija Blanca Cantú (Gilbert Jr.) de Brownsville; hija Berta Roca de Corpus Christi; hijo Adalberto Roca (Deisy Edith) de Brownsville; hija Dra. Prisci Roca Tipton de Brownsville; hijo Dr. Ricardo Francisco Roca (Griselda) de San Antonio; y su hijo Max Eric Roca de Brownsville; también le sobreviven sus 13-nietos: Scott Roca Tipton, Adaleisy Edith Roca, Ricardo Francisco Roca III, Camila Isabel Roca, Lizette Cantu, Denise Gonzalez (Guadalupe), Gilbert Cantu III (Elizabeth), Brenda Cantu, Angela Gonzalez, Cassandra Rhines (Dexter), Lianeth Alexandra Lozano, Cindy Olivares (Víctor) y Alexis Cantú; y ademas de 15-bisnietos: Victoria Ruelas, Amari Bravo, Alexander Bravo, Gael Gonzalez, Gabriela Gonzalez, Gianna Cantu, Gilbert Cantu, Giuliana Cantu, Reginald Clark, Ryan Cantu, Jazmine Anderson, Isaiah Rhines, Kamiyah Rhines, Sofi Olivares, y Santi Olivares.

También le sobreviven sus dos hermanos y una hermana de Ecuador, Sudamérica: hermana Mercedes Elena Roca Villavicencio de Ayauca (Colón Ayauca+), hermano Virgilio Roca Villavicencio, y hermano Luis Antonio Roca Villavicencio (Piedad); así como 43 sobrinas y sobrinos de Ecuador; y mas de 50 sobrinas y sobrinos nietos de Ecuador.

Buen trabajo Don Ricardo, que Dios ya está abriendo las puertas del cielo al “Niño Polizonte†de Brownsville! Descanse en Paz Don Ricardo Roca.

La velación se llevara acabo el viernes, 21 de enero del 2022 de 1:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m. con un servicio de oración a las 6:00 p.m. en la funeraria Sunset Memorial. La velacion continuará el sábado, 22 de enero del 2022 a las 8:00 a.m. en la Funeraria Sunset Memorial. La procesion iniciara a las 9:30 a.m. para celebrar Misa de Cuerpo presente a las 10:00 a.m. en la Iglesia St. Mary’s Mother of Church. Los servicios concluirán al final de la misa. Los portadores del féretro serán Adalberto Roca, Dr. Ricardo Francisco Roca, Max Eric Roca, Scott Roca Tipton, Gilberto Cantu y Gilberto Cantu Jr.
