Gilbert was such a kind, respectful, witty, and sweet man. He will be sorely missed here on South Padre Island. I hope his family finds peace.

Gilbert was an INCREDIBLE man…. His service to his country and his community was an example to us ALL! He truly loved his job and made ME And I am sure everyone feel SO special!

Whenever I was having a rough day or there were “rude” people In front of me…. He would always have something GOOD to say….. many times it was “Mrs. Morrison, they may be just having a bad day…. It’s ok….”

He would always offer to carry the MANY boxes I would receive to my car for me….. or have my “yellow ticket” items waiting for me before I even asked!

The hash rag #goodandfaithfulservant is the epitome of the man I knew and grew to love and admire….

    Until we see you again!

Gilbert was one of those “once in a lifetime” people! We are blessed to have known him, and we are so very sad that God chose him sooner than any of us would have wanted. It’s as if the entire Island is sad in this loss…as he was a friend to so many. Rest in peace, Gilbert!

Blessings to Gilbert’s family. Prayers and sincerest condolences. Gilbert was a joy to see when visiting the post office….he greeted by name and took care to help. Last saw him when forwarding my mail earlier this year….he was truly a sweetheart….appreciated him so much….so sad to hear he is gone….will forever be an angel.

My deepest condolences to Gilbert’s whole family. He was such a wonderful man and friend. Our island was so very blessed to have him here for so many years. I saw him at least once a week and will always remember our visits about art, his time in the service and Germany, our love of travel, his love of Green Day, and so much more. His passing has left us a huge hole as i’m sure you are all feeling. I’ve never heard an unkind word about Gilbert and never heard him utter an unkind word. May his memory be a blessing.

Thank you brother for the your awesome attitude that we all came to know here on the Island. We can all take a lesson from your kind soul. God speed my brother in your eternal journey! – Louis Balderas, Jr.

Gilbert was one of the kindest people that we would encounter every day at the South Padre Island post office. Our deepest sympathy to his family. He will be missed very much.

How did he know all of our names? How was he able to make each and every one of us feel like his favorite Post Office client? Gilbert, you were…. nothing short of amazing.
I suspect I am not the only one with a Gilbert story. I would like to hear yours. I will start:
It was sometime after Dolly and the extended period of no power. Another storm was coming, so I ordered a small generator – just in case. The storm was already upon us and businesses were shutting down, rain coming down in sheets. A car pulls into my driveway, and it is Gilbert, personally delivering the ordered generator to my door. “Thought you might need this” he says with his characteristic grin.
Talk about service above and beyond! As it turned out, I did not need that generator at that time, but I will never forget the comfort of knowing our own personal USPS angel was watching over me.
Damn it, Gilbert. This is just breaking my heart….

To the family of Gilbert. Please know that not only was Gilbert very loved and respected on the island, he really made our island a little lighter, a little bit less stressed, and always made us smile. He always showed a genuine interest and compassion, I am so sorry for your loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you and you family and also his island family. This is truly heartbreaking.

To the family of Gilbert: I only knew Gilbert from behind the counter at the post office in SPI. But he made such an impact on me and all of my family. He was truly a gentle soul, and made the post office a pleasant place to visit. He even gave my granddaughter a toy one Christmas . She loved to peek her head in just to say hello even when we had no business to take care of. His version of customer service is what we all desire in a business. May he rest in peace, and may God give you the peace that passes all understanding. I personally look forward to seeing Gilbert again in heaven someday. He was one of a kind, and I know everyone on the island will miss him for many years.

As a winter Texan I always looked forward to seeing Gilbert’s friendly face. None of my questions were silly and he was always respectful and helpful. He will be missed as part of my SPI family!!
