Maria Antonieta Garza Cortinas

Maria Antonieta Garza Cortinas,72, passed away Friday, June 25, 2021, after a 6-year battle with cancer surrounded by family and loved ones. She was born to the late Miguel Angel Garza and Josefina Garza Pacheco in Valle Hermoso, Mexico, December 2, 1948.

Maria graduated from Brownsville High School, obtained a cosmetology license, and was a successful entrepreneur. She loved running her own business and enjoyed lasting friendships with many of her clientele for years. She was gifted hundreds of elephants to decorate her salon.

She found her real joy in life spending time with her grandchildren, family, and siblings. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, antiquing, bargain hunting, and slot machines. She was fond of travelling, good food, and was a spirited dancer (sometimes at family gatherings and sometimes while cooking). Maria was a light and joy in the lives of all who encountered her, high spirited and energetic, vibrant, and beautiful. She made the world a better place; those of us whose paths crossed hers are blessed to have known such a vibrant star on life’s horizon.

Left to treasure her memory is her husband Lucio Cortinas, Her sons and their wives, Miguel Angel Garza Cortinas and Lori Ann Cortinas, Roberto Garza Cortinas and Marybel Ramirez-Cortinas, and Lucio Garza Cortinas Junior and Azucena Cortinas, Her daughter with her husband, Corina, and Gary Veazey. Even if she fought her battle for the last 2 and 1/2 years, she taught me to be strong and valiant and mostly not letting her illness take away her independence and happiness. I tried to be by her side as much as possible and her love, understanding and sense of humor is what kept me strong. She did not give up her battle until she was so tired she could not fight anymore. This illness did not take my sister down until about a month and 1/2 ago. What a courageous woman she was. I will always love her and the beautiful memories she left behind.
